Leading Edge Human Resource Network>
January 15th Meeting Recap & Presentation

15 Jan 2010

Ninety (90) members and friends attended the January LEHRN meeting hosted by the Cargill Talent Recruiting Group at their new location at Excelsior Crossing in Hopkins. Our special thank you to Cheri Hanson and Gina Dehmer and other members of the Talent Recruiting group for handling the organization of the LEHRN event at Cargill.

Pat Foss, LEHRN Member (he promises) and President of ThinkTalent Strategies (top notch Taleo implementation consultant and talent management strategist) offered up a LEHRN 20/20 presentation (i.e. 20 slides in rapid fire) on his favorite new software, MindJet. Pat gave us an overview of MindJet in most of its chameleon forms. There are many looks to its single interface. Primarily MindJet is a visualization tool which capably performs as a PowerPoint-type presentation tool, brainstorming documenter, project management tool, note taker, process documentation tool, and the list goes on. It also exports to convenient file types for sharing. Cool tool. Runs about $325. Maybe LEHRN can request a group discount. Thanks Pat for the MindJet demo and for the ThinkTalent notepads.

Although only a few months into her role as North American Talent Recruiting Leader, Kristen Weirick presented a comprehensive approach on how Cargill will drive its talent acquisition programs towards a set of “Next Best Practices” being identified by the Talent Recruiting group. Kristen came to Cargill from Whirlpool and actually made initial connections with Cargill via LinkedIn. She knows what recruiting technologies work! We couldn’t beat the meeting room Internet website restrictions so be sure to download Kristen’s presentation and watch the several very clever videos that were part of her presentation. Her key themes included:

• HR must work to humanize advancing technology and require tools to sustain high quality
relationships with all users/stakeholders
• Differentiate ‘best practices’ from ‘next best practices’
• A ten (10) point checklist for identifying and delivering ‘next best practices.

And there were a number of other concepts worth stealing and repeating from her presentation. Her slim deck of 15 slides packed substantial content. Thank you Kristen. Glad to have you as a LEHRN speaker and future participant.

Thirty years of experience was evident in Judy Sweeney’s knowledge of industry and financial trends. Working in the functional trenches of HR as most LEHRN members do , Judy obliged us to look above our daily challenges to see if our work truly aligns with the business(es) we serve. Judy offered LEHRN participants a seven part presentation that began with the world as we (should) know it and ended with her crystal ball-views of what we should expect our world-of-work to be like in 2015. Judy’s principle messages included survey and research documentation that:

• The War for Talent still rages and may worsen
• Intangible Assets of Goodwill, Brand, Workforce Talent, Knowledge now represent 90% of the
average company’s market value.
• Most companies under invest in managing their intangible assets - particularly in acquiring and
managing talent
• HR sees itself differently than it is evaluated by line managers - and HR is not as strategic and
accountable as our customers want us to be
• The TM platform of the future will be required to deliver: Single User Interface, Ease of Use,
Application Integration, Administration, Scalability, Security, Reliability
• The future is “Jobs will come to candidates” more than the obverse (today’s model)

If you appreciate the communicating power of a well designed image - check out slides 45, 46, 49, 76. Judy also summarized the essence of her presentation into nine (9) key principles found on page 77. Judy has asked that requests for copies of her presentation be made to her directly. Please email you request to her at jtsweeney@taleo.com.

Good interactive conversation followed all presentations on Friday. It must also be noted that a highlight of the meeting was the delivery, of bowls full of Cargill’s super premium chocolate specialties from the Wilbur Chocolate line. Thanks to all presenters, all participants, and to the talent at the Cargill’ s Wilbur Chocolate factory.

All meeting participants were urged to reserve February 19th , 2010, for the LEHRN HR TECH EXPO. A great event requires a great turnout. Volunteers needed
